Gemini file editing is now live in the Gemini app: you can generate, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code inside a chat, Google announced on 29 October 2026.
How Gemini file editing works
- Ask Gemini to create a file, then preview it inside the chat.
- Expand the preview to full screen to type your own edits.
- Highlight text to ask Gemini a question about it or to refine that part of the file.
- Google’s example: upload handwritten lecture notes, ask for a PDF study guide, then edit and highlight sections to have Gemini change text or visuals.
Gemini file editing: formats and availability
- PDF preview and editing works on both web and mobile.
- Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code are supported on the web only.
- Google says the features are available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is available.
- The announcement does not name countries, plans or a price. Whether your account has it is shown in the app.
What this means for you
If you draft study notes, reports or code snippets with Gemini, you can now fix them in place instead of copying text out to another app. On a phone you are limited to PDFs, so use the web version for Docs, Sheets, slides and code.
What to check before you use it
- Update the Gemini app and try a PDF on your phone first, since that is the only format on mobile.
- Read generated text and numbers before you share a file; Gemini’s edits are not fact-checked for you.
- Look in the app for any plan-specific limits, as Google’s post lists none.
