Authorities Inform WhatsApp, Telegram, and Other Messaging Platforms: 90-Day Compliance Deadline Issued

The Indian government has issued a strict 90-day warning to WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal and other messaging platforms, directing them to disable their services if the user’s registered SIM card is removed or inactive. The new mandate aims to tighten digital security and curb rising online fraud cases linked to unverified or abandoned numbers.

All messaging apps must implement SIM-binding, ensuring that an account only works when the original SIM used during registration remains active and inserted in the device.

Web and desktop versions of these apps will require periodic re-authentication to prevent unauthorized access, introducing tighter login controls for millions of users in India.
